300B-SE-Poweramp

Here you can see a few pictures of my actual 300B-SE-Amp with russian 6H8C driver stage tubes (NOS-boxed military tubes out of 62/03) and (since 3 weeks) the "new" 300B´s EH with gold grids.

rc.jpg (56275 Byte) <- ALPS-motordriven potentiometer soldered on a 2" test PCB including the IR-receiver/controller

rc5_elektor.jpg (221881 Byte) <- The IR/poti-controller layout/schematic is taken out of the german DIY electronic magazine "Elektor" of 2000/12 (it´s also possible to download the layout at the Elektor homepage) and works with an ATMEL AT90S2343 microcontroller-chip. The receiver is programmable as much as you want and works with every RC5 remote control. But I didn´t take the complete kit from Elektor. I´ve built it completely by myself. The only thing I wasn´t able to do by myself was programming the controller with the needed software, that you can also download at the Elektor homepage.  Segor is a German electronic distributor where you can send the software to (via e-mail attachement) so that it´s no problem for everyone to get a programmed controller. A second advantage (in my case) is, that I can use the original remote control of my CD. There are two buttons for "clear" and "store" (C+S) at the RC. They are only active when I am in the "program mode" of the CD (favorite tracks at a specific sequence...). Since I never use that feature, I am possible to volume up/down the gain with this two buttons of the RC. A third advantage is, that there is only one RC lieing on the table ;-)

A few topics of my amp

Case: Ni-Fe

Transformer: specific wounded for my use (voltages...)

Output-Transformers: Welter HE-ET30

Choke: Welter DR3 -  10H -  200mA

Power tubes: Electro Harmonix 300B EH (Sovtek); since 13.03.03 -> 300B EH "gold"

Rectifier: 5u3C (russ.) ~ 5U4G

Driver stage: 6H8C (russ.) ~ 6SN7

I will try to load up the schematics for the amp the next time.

Because the 6H8C´s are working with a regulated power supply, I took my "old" LT1038´s (I know that they are much to big because of the 10 amps power ;-)), but I still have had them out of 1999 (for that time they worked for the DC-heating of the 2A3´s).

Since about 4 weeks the amp now works with fixed bias instead of cathode bias.

The schematic itself is taken out of the Angela (JE-Labs) 300B-SE (for about 90%). Like told before it now works with fixed bias. I have biased the 300B´s at about 400V Va and 70mA Ia at a load resistance of 3k Ra. Output power is about 10-11 watts now. The grid voltage of the 300B´s is about -80V with the gold grid versions. Both tubes show identic results at all tests.

The 300B´s gold really sound great. They really have a lot more treble extension.

The tubes themselves I got from Hong Kong. I have buyed them the "ebay way" at a highly recommended powerseller. Pricing for the tubes was (still is) 120€ for a matched pair. Shipping is about 10€. The seller ships worldwide!!
